THE TEAM

Doctor Geoffrey Alastair Cockrell BDS (Guy’s) MB ChB (Bristol)
Medical Doctor and Dental Surgeon – Surgery Principal

Bachelor of Dental Surgery • Bachelor of Medicine • Bachelor of Surgery • General Dental Council Registration 81106 • General Medical Council Registration 7041954

Many decades ago, the gentle approach and kindness demonstrated by the local family dentist not only dispelled Geoff’s lifelong and absolute dental phobia, but also inspired him to return to study and eventually join the profession. Geoff has built upon his own experience to nurture an approach that aims to make his patient’s visits to the dentist as pleasant as possible.

Following completion of his dental degree and after working in practice, hospital, NHS and private settings, Geoff returned to study medicine and surgery. He has worked in General Medicine, General Surgery, Cardiology, Urology and Maxillofacial Surgery. Geoff also currently holds an Honorary Contract with the Maxillofacial Surgery department at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust where he also serves as an appraiser of registered medical and surgical doctors.

During the Covid crisis in 2020 Geoff briefly returned to serve as a medical doctor in General Internal Medicine at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

The focus of Geoff’s practice is in implantology, oral surgery, crowns, bridges, reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry.

In what little spare time is available, Geoff is a reluctant runner, likes to work on his old Land Rover (also a reluctant runner!), and, most importantly, spend time with his family and little dog (Jimmy).

Mrs Eve Cockrell RDN
Surgery Manager/Owner

General Dental Council 139362

Eve was born and lived in Germany until 2007. She entered the dental profession by chance when looking for a new job on relocating from Greifswald to Mannheim in her early 20’s. On qualifying from the three-year training scheme, Eve found that she enjoyed the job so much that she went on to retrain as a hygienist and then as dental therapist. Alongside her clinical roles, Eve gained a qualification in ‘The ISO Implementation of Quality Management in the Dental Setting’.

Since moving to England, Eve has worked within NHS and Private dentistry. Her extensive experience and qualifications in both this country and in Europe ideally place her to run Ivy Cross Dental Surgery. Despite the challenges of her managerial position Eve does not want to step away from her clinical role or the satisfaction she gains from supporting patients with the dentist.

Eve feels the most rewarding aspect of her role is seeing the positive impact on a patient’s confidence and their excitement following cosmetic or restorative procedures.

The challenges of Eve’s role mean that her good intentions to engage in regular exercise tend to degenerate into a glass of wine in the garden, rather than time on the treadmill! Next week that will change!

Phillipa Charteris RDH
Dental Hygienist

General Dental Council Registration 2607

Philippa grew up in Zimbabwe and trained at Bristol Dental Hospital.

Philippa understands that some people believe that treatment by a hygienist is often considered ‘the worst’ aspect of dental care. It is both her and our view that prevention and dental hygiene represents our most important and significant role.

We wanted Philippa on our team as she has always gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that she treats everyone with great care. Her bubbly personality, enthusiasm, experience and gentle approach not only serves to dispel concerns about ‘seeing the hygienist’ but has led to a significant improvement in our patient’s oral health. This in turn leads to a reduction in the need for other treatments.

Philippa gains enormous satisfaction and pleasure from seeing a nervous patient becoming more and more relaxed and confident to the point where they even enjoy and look forward to the experience. She feels that finding that special key that unlocks a patient’s motivation adds to the rewarding nature of her role.

At home Philippa enjoys gardening, although has found that the more she learns, the less she finds she knew!

We are delighted to have Philippa on our team.

Miss Emily Reynolds
Trainee Dental Nurse

General Dental Council – In training

Emily has already completed a good proportion of her training and we look forward to her attaining full registration from the General Dental Council in 2025

Mr Jimmy Chew
Staff and Patient Support Worker

For almost his entire life Jimmy has lived above and around Ivy Cross Dental Surgery. Although he has been engaged in some formal training, he has demonstrated that he prefers a much more experiential approach to life.

Although Jimmy is not permitted to enter the clinical setting, he often takes time out of his gruelling ‘shoe and trainer modification’ schedule to put in an occasional appearance either in reception or in the back garden and patient seating area.

With his seemingly boundless positivity and gregarious nature he is a well-loved member of the team.
